Stone countertops are very popular because they have the look of something luxurious and expensive. However, there are some striking differences between quartz and granite. If you’re stuck trying to choose one over the other, you should know why one might be better suited to your home.

Granite Is Softer and More Easily Damaged

Granite is a softer and more porous stone. You can scratch granite with a sharp kitchen knife, where it is much harder to leave a similar mark on quartz. Because granite is more porous than quartz, any liquids leave stains behind. Everything from wine to gravy can make your granite counters a mess. Granite is harder to clean too.

You Have to Use Special Cleaners on Granite

Granite requires that you avoid harsh cleaners and anything abrasive. Quartz can be cleaned with a simple warm rag and a mild soap. The cost of keeping the counters clean is greater for granite because of the need to avoid certain cleaning products and having to purchase a special stain remover.

You Have to Reseal Granite Twice a Year

Quartz is a one-and-done material. It doesn’t require you to reseal it. Granite, on the other hand, requires that you reseal it every six to 12 months. That can get costly. Avoiding resealing it will leave the granite unprotected and open to major damage. If you really don’t want to get into the costs of maintaining granite and preventing damage to it, quartz is a better option.

Quartz: Color Options and Variations

Granite comes in multiple colors, but quartz, being man-made, has a lot more variations and striations. If you are trying to get that perfect countertop color to match or complement your kitchen, granite is probably your best bet. However, the bold patterns and variations in quartz tend to be very striking. Be sure to check out all of the colors of both of these types of stone to see what you fancy most.
